diagnostic criteria for Sjogren's syndrome

Diagnostic criteria: 1) ocular signs & symptoms a) dry eyes every day for more than 3 months b) recurrent sensation of sand or gravel in the eyes or use of tear substitutes more than 3 times/day c) positive Schirmer's I test or rose Bengal score of >= 4 (Bijsterveld's scoring) 2) oral symptoms a) daily feeling of dry mouth for more than 3 months b) recurrent or persistently swollen salivary glands, or use of liquids to aid in swallowing dry foods 3) histopathology - focus score 1 in minor salivary gland biopsy 4) salivary gland involvement by a) salivary scintigraphy, or b) parotid sialography, or c) salivary flow (=< 1.5 mL in 15 min) 5) autoantibodies to: a) anti-SSA/Ro Ab, or b) anti-SSB/La Ab, or c) antinuclear antibodies (ANA)*, or d) rheumatoid factor (RF)* * not included as criteria in [2[ Exclusion criteria: 1) previous head & neck radiation 2) hepatitis C 3) AIDS 4) pre-existing lymphoma 5) sarcoidosis 6) graft-vs-host disease 7) use of anticholinergic agent(s)
